How do you pack a waste free lunchbox? This means only using material, which can be composted, recycled or reused to pack lunches. No plastic wrap, zip lock bags and pre-packaged foods. Nothing ends up in the garbage bin and you won’t be adding to landfill. By doing our bit to help the environment we often end up packing foods that are good for us too. Tips to help plan:
- A lunch box with a variety of compartments or a few smaller containers to hold different snacks are great. Containers are perfect for dinner leftovers too.
- Plan a cook and freeze session on the weekend. Pack the food into meal size containers. It makes it easy to grab and run on a busy morning.
- Buy store-bought foods like fruit bread, wholegrain crackers and dried fruit in bigger amounts not individual packs, these are often more affordable too. Pack them into smaller containers for the lunchbox.
- Some foods like fresh fruit come with their own packing – skin. But if you do peel and cut it up put it in a reusable container.
- If you need to go disposable use paper bags and paper wrap – they can be recycled or composted.
