Summer is coming and that means BBQ weather. Have you been asked to bring a plate and/or meat to share at a family or social event?
Want something to
- Win over the crowd?
- Be fresh and simple?
- Please the kids?
Think variety for mains and salads
- Chicken skewers (try different flavours like soy, herb).
- Vegetables burgers with legumes or tofu (as the main ingredient). The Move Well Eat Well website has some tasty vegetable burger recipes.
- Just add corn, sweet potato, zucchini, pineapple and mushroom to the BBQ to make tasty sides
- A platter of mixed chopped vegetables like carrot, cucumber, capsicums, tomato’s along with roasted potato, pumpkin and beetroot make a great alternative to a salad. Kids can pick and choose from the selection.
- Include wholegrain and whole meal breads, rolls and flat breads.

Seasonal fresh sweet ideas
- Look for what fresh is in season in the produce isle.
- Local fresh berries are always a summer hit.
- Chopped fresh fruit on a stick is a fun way to serve fruit for a crowd and always popular with children.
- Make a shape – if you have time have some fun with a cookie cutter and cut fruit like melon into trees and stars (great festive food idea).
Fun drinks
- Water is the best thirst quencher but how about mixing it up? Try cutting up some whole fruit and mix with cold water or unflavoured mineral water. Try watermelon, strawberries, apple or frozen berries.
This summer think fresh, local and seasonal. This can mean less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying the party. For more ideas for summer BBQ's and Picnics and Food Safety tips
