If you are pregnant it is important to take extra care in hot weather. During pregnancy body temperature can rise. This makes pregnant women uncomfortable in hot weather and could be harmful.
As the weather starts to heat up, here are some tips to help guide you on how to cope on warmer days.
Keep cool
- Rest when you can, ideally in a cool room.
- Place a bowl of ice cubes in front of an electric fan.
- Use a spray bottle filled with water to cool your face.
- Place a wet face washer with cold water and use it to cool down your face and neck.
- If possible, limit going outside during mid to late afternoon. This is usually the hottest part of the day.
Drinking and eating
- Drink water throughout the day.
- Carry a cold bottle of water, if you go out. This is a good reminder to drink.
- Cool down with homemade icy poles or ice blocks made from frozen fruit.
- If you do not feel as hungry try eating lighter meals such as homemade salads; pre-prepared salads may contain listeria a common bug which can make you and your baby very sick.

Clothing and sun protection
- Wear sunscreen (minimum SPF30+) when outside. Remember to re-apply every two hours, especially if you are spending time in the water.
- Wear lightweight, loose clothing.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat, which shades your face neck and ears and sunglasses.
Physical Activity
- Plan physical activity for the cooler parts of the day such as early morning or later in the evening.
- Listen to your body and be flexible. You may need to change activity or stop.
- Gentle swimming in a non-heated pool is also a great way to cool down.
If you are feeling unwell, call your doctor, midwife or maternity unit.
