A Tasmanian Government and Community Partnership
Building community capacity to afford and produce healthy meals.
The Food REDI - Healthy Me, Healthy You initiative is a weekly program held over a six-month period that is designed to increase the confidence of participants to buy and cook healthy food for their families and to educate them on how to get the best value for money at the supermarket.
The project demonstrated basic and useful cooking skills and resources for the 8-10 adults attending the workshops.
A children’s program was also designed with a ‘Superfood heroes’ theme – covering a different hero each week and combining games and cooking. This modified version kept the 10 children interested and entertained whilst learning important life skills.
Participants reported an improvement in their knowledge and skills relating to good nutrition, making good food choices and the preparation of healthy foods and meals for their families.
Two of the ladies who participated in the program have indicated that they would like to look into the possibility of starting a weekly lunch for the community where each week a new group of people would volunteer to design the menu and cook the meal.
