Walkable Futures Clarence, Clarence City Council

Walkability improved and now in use by Lindisfarne residents
  • Walkability audit framework developed at Clarence City Council in partnership with Heart Foundation and community participants to improve liveability in areas vulnerable to poor health outcomes.

Walkable Futures Clarence is an innovative and sustainable approach to creating healthier communities within the City of Clarence local government area.

The project pilot will focus on the Lindisfarne and Rokeby communities, with target groups in these areas including senior citizens, mother and baby groups and users of medical facilities.

The walkability audit will provide a framework for other suburbs whilst improving the walkability of the Clarence area, creating a healthier environment and will seek community involvement by actively approaching and partnering with community groups that are willing and committed to improving walkability within the municipality.

The Walkable Futures Clarence project will use GPS tracking systems to accurately record details of impediments to walking safely through suburbs. Data obtained from the tracking systems will allow the council to produce a walkability audit which has more detail than current walk score ratings.

The council’s Future Footpath Renewal Program can then be targeted towards strategically improving the walkability of the suburbs, creating a healthier environment and improve planning outcomes in future subdivision developments.

The project also plans to develop and make available a handbook to conducting walkability audits within communities.
