Hobart City Farm - Fresh Connections

Partnering with local Neighbourhood Houses to build the existing social enterprise, increase reach and reduce barriers to access to fresh, affordable local vegetables.

The Fresh Connections project aims to expand the capacity of the Hobart City Farm to supply local community house box schemes with fresh affordable local vegetables to enable more Tasmanians to eat nutritious and safe food and make positive choices about their health and wellbeing. The capacity of the existing operation has now been expanded to include a new plant nursery (to extend the growing season and maximise output) and the construction of a cool room to help manage the increase in production.

Over the course of the project, farm tours were offered to a range of education and community organisations. Groups that visited the farm included employees of MONA’s 24 Carrots program, students from Warrane and Lindisfarne Primary Schools and Cosgrove High School, and Permaculture Design Certificate students.

The program also saw many visits from individuals from different community and market gardens around Tasmania and Australia and has established a weekly volunteer program on Tuesday afternoons to help local community members learn the skills they need to grow their own vegetables.

A nursery was also built to supply seedlings and seed to a number of local community organisations including the Creek Road Community Garden, Kickstart Arts Music garden weekly event, local residents of the Moonah and Newtown areas and primary schools including Bowen Road Primary School, Warrane Primary School, South Hobart Primary School and Mount Nelson Primary.
